An Italian woman reports rape while vacationing on a beach in Albania, prompting swift police action that led to the arrest of a suspect with a prior criminal record.
The assault took place early Thursday morning on the coast of Durrës, a popular tourist destination. Authorities said the 18-year-old woman had returned to her hotel’s beachfront area alone after spending the night with friends. Around 5:25 AM, while she was resting on a sun lounger, she was attacked.
Albanian police identified the suspect as 26-year-old Leonard Preza. He was taken into custody within hours of the victim filing a complaint. Preza has previous convictions related to theft and illegal possession of firearms, police confirmed.
Victim’s statement and suspect’s response
According to information reported by Italian news agency ANSA, the young woman said she was separated from her group of friends before the incident.
She told investigators that while she was sitting alone in front of the hotel, a man approached her and carried out the assault. Despite her efforts to resist, she said she was unable to stop him.
Preza admitted to having sexual contact with the woman but claimed it was consensual. However, medical tests conducted shortly after the report revealed bruising on the woman’s neck and other parts of her body. Investigators said these physical injuries were consistent with the use of force.
Ongoing investigation and broader context
Local authorities have not released further details about the ongoing investigation. The case has drawn attention both in Albania and Italy, raising concerns about tourist safety in the region.
This is not the first time Albania’s coastline has faced scrutiny over safety issues, especially during peak tourist months. The Durrës area remains one of the most visited beach destinations for travelers from across Europe, including Italy.
Police said the suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. Prosecutors are now working to gather further evidence and determine whether formal charges will follow.
