Authorities have dismantled a drug distribution ring operating in small towns outside Rome, where suspects used digital platforms to coordinate the sale of illegal substances. The network was responsible for widespread drug trafficking via social media, targeting even minors in the municipalities of Carpineto Romano, Segni, Montelanico, Artena and Valmontone.

The Carabinieri arrested nine individuals in a coordinated operation that began at dawn. Three of them were placed under house arrest. The suspects include a 53-year-old man and several others between the ages of 20 and 25. All face charges of drug possession and trafficking, along with 15 additional offenses. Investigators reported that some of the sales were made directly to minors.

The criminal group used social media and encrypted messaging apps to arrange drug deals in coded language. Transactions often took place in local public areas, commonly used by young residents. Authorities said the suspects sold hashish, marijuana and cocaine, operating a decentralized but structured distribution model.

Surveillance and wiretaps helped map the network

The investigation, led by the Colleferro unit of the Carabinieri and supported by officers from Frascati and a canine team from Santa Maria di Galeria, began in June 2023. It relied heavily on surveillance, wiretaps and undercover operations.

Officers conducted 11 home searches during the operation, including two properties tied to individuals not formally charged. Investigators found that in some cases, young buyers, unable to afford drugs individually, pooled their money to make group purchases. This pattern was uncovered during months of monitoring and contributed to the charges involving underage users.

During the investigation, three arrests were made in the act of dealing. Police seized more than three kilograms of hashish, around 10 grams of cocaine, and 40 grams of marijuana. Several young buyers were also identified and referred to the Rome Prefecture for further action.

Authorities said the network’s use of modern communication tools allowed it to operate discreetly and expand its reach across several municipalities. The successful dismantling of the group highlights growing concerns around drug trafficking via social media, particularly when it involves vulnerable youth.
