In a move blending travel and therapy, Sweden becomes first country prescribed by medical professionals as a complementary treatment to support mental and physical wellbeing.

The initiative, developed by Visit Sweden, allows patients to request a medical referral recommending travel to Sweden. The program promotes the healing power of nature, cultural activities and social experiences as alternative therapies to reduce stress and support recovery. It is backed by research from Karolinska Institutet, one of the world’s top medical universities.

Senior professor Yvonne Forsell, who reviewed the health benefits associated with each suggested activity, supports the idea. The list includes outdoor and cultural activities such as berry picking, forest bathing and sauna sessions, which may help with blood pressure, sleep and emotional recovery.

The program offers downloadable referral forms that patients can present to their doctors. While travel expenses are not covered, Visit Sweden has partnered with a list of doctors open to prescribing the visit when appropriate. Though GPs in some countries may remain cautious, advocates see growing support for non-clinical therapies.

Doctors encourage open conversations with patients

Dr. Sam Everington, a general practitioner based in London, said Sweden’s nature, social settings and cultural richness hold strong therapeutic value. He encourages patients to start conversations with their doctors about alternative treatment options, noting that many people are unaware they can initiate such discussions.

Everington added that while the UK has made progress with social prescribing, more work is needed to integrate it into mainstream healthcare. He welcomed Sweden’s approach and expressed hope that it would help dismantle institutional barriers that often limit alternative therapies.

According to a YouGov global survey, 67% of medical professionals in the UK would recommend Sweden as a destination to support health and wellbeing. Supporters say this unique approach could reshape how physicians address issues like burnout, stress, and mild mental health conditions.

Although not officially recognized in all countries, the fact that Sweden becomes first country prescribed for such purposes could lead to wider adoption. For now, patients interested in the program are encouraged to consult with supportive healthcare providers and explore whether the travel-based remedy suits their needs.
