Toxicology tests have confirmed that Italian woman Simona Cinà, who was found dead in a swimming pool in Bagheria last month, had no drugs in her system but showed high levels of alcohol. The 20-year-old athlete from Capaci died on August 2 during a graduation party held at a private villa.
The forensic medicine team at the Palermo Polyclinic conducted the analysis, coordinated by Dr. Tommaso D’Anna, who also performed the autopsy. The results ruled out the presence of both traditional and synthetic drugs. However, investigators say the amount of alcohol detected was significant and could have contributed to her death.
Cinà, a volleyball player reportedly in good health, was discovered at around 4 a.m. by one of the party guests. Emergency services were called immediately, but paramedics were only able to confirm her death upon arrival.
Investigation continues into cause of death
The Termini Imerese Prosecutor’s Office is leading a manslaughter investigation into the case. Authorities are still working to determine the exact cause of death, with attention focused on whether drowning occurred. The presence or absence of water in the lungs is considered a key detail in establishing this.
Investigators are also awaiting the full autopsy report, which may reveal whether any undiagnosed medical conditions could have played a role. Cinà was known to undergo regular health checks due to her participation in sports.
The case has raised public interest due to the unexpected nature of her death and her background as a young athlete. While alcohol was present in high levels, experts say more evidence is needed before drawing conclusions about how she died.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not ruled out any possibilities. The full forensic report is expected to provide more clarity in the coming weeks.
