Two armed Turkish citizens were arrested by Italian police just hours before the start of the Santa Rosa Festival in Viterbo, raising security concerns around one of the region’s most important annual events.

The men were discovered inside a bed and breakfast near the Santa Rosa Monastery, carrying a submachine gun, a pistol, and dozens of rounds of ammunition. Authorities are investigating whether the two were preparing to carry out an attack.

The two suspects, aged 31 and 21, were taken into custody around 6 PM. They are being held on charges of arms trafficking. The arrest occurred shortly before the traditional procession of the “Macchina di Santa Rosa,” a major religious and cultural event recognized by UNESCO.

Investigations and suspected criminal ties

According to law enforcement sources, the arrested men may have links to Turkish organized crime. Their presence in Viterbo and possession of automatic weapons triggered immediate concern.

Investigators have not confirmed plans for a terrorist act, but say the possibility cannot be ruled out. No explosives were found at the property, and authorities remain cautious in their statements.

The suspects were questioned by prosecutor Massimiliano Siddi of the Viterbo Public Prosecutor’s Office but chose to remain silent. They are currently being held in Viterbo prison as investigations continue.

Forensic teams searched their mobile devices, electronic equipment, and personal items found in the guesthouse. Cross-border coordination with Turkish authorities is ongoing, as police work to verify the suspects’ background and any international connections.

Link to previous arrests and government reaction

Officials noted a potential link to another case involving a high-profile Turkish crime boss arrested in Viterbo on August 26. That individual, who was wanted on an international warrant, was hiding in a separate guesthouse in the city. At the time, police detained three other Turkish nationals believed to be part of the same criminal network.

The arrest of the two armed Turkish citizens at Santa Rosa Festival drew national attention. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised the rapid response of law enforcement, crediting the operation with preventing a potential threat.

She said the effort ensured the safety of a deeply rooted celebration that holds cultural and historical importance for both Viterbo and the wider Italian public.
