Thieves stole luxury handbags and clothing worth approximately €200,000 during a late-night break-in at a Dior boutique in central Florence, authorities said Monday.
The incident occurred around 3 AM at the store on Via Strozzi, in the heart of the city’s historic center. Investigators believe the group entered the boutique through a nearby building on Via Sassetti, avoiding any visible damage at the initial access point.
They reportedly moved through the cellar and into the Dior store via an interior door.
According to police, the break-in triggered the store’s anti-theft system, which released smoke canisters. The smoke initially caused confusion, with private security believing it might be a fire. Firefighters responded and later confirmed the smoke was part of the store’s alarm system.
Investigation points to organized operation
The theft, now labeled by police as a well-organized case of Dior shoplifting in Florence, is under investigation. Officers are reviewing security footage from several nearby surveillance cameras to identify suspects and track possible escape routes.
Authorities say the method used suggests the thieves had detailed knowledge of the building’s internal layout. They noted that the criminals likely scoped the premises in advance and were familiar with the unalarmed access route from Via Sassetti. No forced entry was found at the external door, further indicating the group’s preparation.
Police suspect that multiple individuals were involved, including lookouts stationed near Piazza della Repubblica to watch for patrolling officers, security guards or pedestrians during the heist.
So far, no arrests have been made. Investigators are also examining whether the robbery is connected to any other recent luxury store thefts in the region.
Authorities urge security review in city center
The Dior shoplifting in Florence has raised concerns among local businesses and city officials about the security of high-end retail stores in the city center.
